Mailer
 
['meɪlə], Norman, amerikanischer Schriftsteller, * Long Branch (New Jersey) 31. 1. 1923; nach dem Studium an der Harvard University Soldat im Pazifik (1944-46); diese Erfahrung verarbeitete er in dem zu einer kritischen Sicht der amerikanischen Gesellschaft ausgeweiteten Kriegsroman »The naked and the dead« (1948; deutsch »Die Nackten und die Toten«). Mailers gesellschaftskritisches Engagement und seine provokante Persönlichkeit machten ihn zu einer umstrittenen öffentlichen Figur. Sein umfassendes Werk sprengt bei der Darbietung scharfsinniger, häufig polemischer Analysen der amerikanischen Gegenwartskultur, die er als totalitär empfindet, oft konventionelle Gattungsgrenzen. Seine politischen und ästhetischen Überzeugungen legte er in dem Essay »The white negro« (1957) dar, in dem sich existenzialistische Weltsicht, Kulturkritik, Faszination durch Sexualität und Gewalt sowie die Hoffnung auf individuellen Bewusstseinswandel widerspruchsvoll mischen. In der Abwendung von tradierten Erzählformen entwickelte er u. a. in »The armies of the night« (1968; deutsch »Heere aus der Nacht«) und »The executioner's song« (1979; deutsch »Gnadenlos«) die Form des »Non-fiction novel«, einer Synthese von Reportage und autobiographischem Roman. Mailer schrieb auch Dramen und Gedichte und drehte Filme.
